Low C extensions
(and Low B extensions, too!)

LIGHTWEIGHT AND NON-INVASIVE

My extensions use two pulleys so that the string travels over the scroll through the body of the extension before going into the pegbox. This prevents drilling a hole in the scroll and helps the playing surface stay in a gentle curve that reduces string buzz.

The extensions are precisely molded to the scroll volute and are held in place with string tension only. There are no screws in the scroll or extension playing surface

While they look like solid ebony, the extensions are made from a lighter wood core with ebony veneers on all sides and reinforced internally with carbon fiber, making them very stable. Depending on the hardware, they usually weigh less than 250g, which I think helps keep things more resonant and avoids a top-heavy bass.

Prices start at $2750, depending on the hardware used. Extensions take about two weeks to make, pending availaibility.

LOW B EXTENSIONS

The two-pulley system works especially well with B extensions, which are often prone to warping and back-bowing when the string runs through the scroll. By routing the string path back through the body of the extension, the force vectors are more balanced, leading to greater stability over time.

B extensions cost only a little more than C extensions, and not every bass is a candidate.

The low B extension below uses the same construction techniques as my C extensions, but with a walnut body (I now only make ebony veneered extensions). The capo hardware is by Rob Anzelotti, which is slightly less expensive to install.

I always make a custom E capo for every extension, which enables closing the capo without needing to hold the string down first.
